Compress to an exact size
Enter a target in MB, or pick a preset for Discord, WhatsApp or email, and the encoder solves for the bitrate that lands under it.
Timeline trim handles
Drag the in and out points directly on a visual timeline; the readout shows the exact trim range.
Loop the cut before you commit
The player previews just the trimmed section on repeat, so there are no surprise frames at either end.
Clean MP4 output
The result is re-encoded to H.264 MP4, the most compatible format for YouTube, editors, and phones.
▸How do I compress a video to a specific file size?
Upload it, turn on the target size, and enter the megabytes you need (or pick the Discord, WhatsApp or email preset). We measure the video, work out the bitrate that fits, and encode in two passes so the result lands just under your number rather than near it.
▸How do I get a video under Discord's 20MB limit?
Pick the Discord preset. It targets 20MB, the free-tier limit for a single message since August 2026 (it was 10MB before that). Discord Nitro raises that to 500MB, which has its own preset. Trimming first helps too: half the length roughly halves the bitrate the encoder has to sacrifice.
▸How do I cut a section out of a video?
Drag the start and end handles around the part you want to keep, then export. The output contains only the selected range.
▸Will compressing reduce video quality?
Compressing to a smaller size always trades some quality, since a smaller file means fewer bits per frame. Two-pass encoding spends those bits where they matter most, so the loss is far less visible than a fixed-quality re-encode at the same size. A generous target is left alone entirely, never padded to fill it.
▸Can I crop the frame or change the aspect ratio here?
This tool works on time and file size. For spatial cropping into vertical 9:16, including a draggable crop box and a facecam layout, use our Shorts Converter.
▸What formats can I upload?
MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI and most other common video formats. The output is always MP4.
▸Is there a file size limit?
Free accounts can upload files up to 1 GB per file. Pro raises the limit to 3 GB and Premium to 5 GB. File Transfer has its own, much higher limits: 10 GB per transfer on Pro and 100 GB on Premium.
▸Why are there length and size limits?
GrumpTools is in beta and runs on a small amount of hardware, so every limit you see is set to what can genuinely finish rather than to what sounds good. We would rather tell you up front than take your file and fail an hour later. These caps are the first thing we raise as the userbase grows and we add capacity, and paid plans are what fund that, so the limits move up over time instead of down.
▸What happens to my files?
Files are processed on our servers and deleted automatically within 24 hours. They are never shared, published, or used for anything except running the job you asked for. The one exception is transcription: the Transcript Generator and Auto Subtitles send your audio (never the video, and never your account details) to our speech-to-text provider, Groq, which returns the text. See our Privacy Policy for the full list of processors.
Free plan: 5 uses per day. Pro and Premium raise or remove the limit.
