A WeTransfer alternative with real link controls

WeTransfer made sending big files feel effortless, and the interface is still the one everyone pictures. What changed is the free plan. Per WeTransfer's own help centre, free accounts get 10 transfers or 3 GB in any 30-day period, whichever runs out first, so a couple of big sends can end your month. If you are hitting that wall, the question is what you actually need from a transfer besides size.

What WeTransfer is good at

  • · The cleanest, most recognisable send flow on the web
  • · Recipients need no account and nothing explained to them
  • · Paid plans are a mature, well-supported product

When you should pick WeTransfer instead

Pick WeTransfer if you send occasionally and want the interface your clients already recognise, or if you are on a paid plan where the monthly cap does not apply. And if raw free size is all you need, be honest with yourself: SwissTransfer gives far more free headroom than either of us. We are not the right pick for someone who only wants the biggest free number.

Frequently asked

What is WeTransfer's free limit?

Per WeTransfer's own help centre as of July 2026, free accounts can send up to 10 transfers or 3 GB in any 30-day period, whichever they reach first. Check their plan-limits page for the current figure, since it has changed more than once.

Does the recipient need an account?

No. They open the link, scan the QR code or type the short code in any browser and download. Only the sender needs a GrumpTools account.

How private is the link?

Links are long, unguessable tokens. On Pro you can add a password that hides everything, including the filename, until it is entered, and you can make the link one-time so it dies after a single download.

Can I send a file without uploading it anywhere?

Yes, on Pro, which is the part no upload service can match. Direct send streams the file straight from your browser to the recipient's over an encrypted peer-to-peer connection, so it is never stored on our servers at all and there is no size limit from us. We only relay the handshake that lets the two devices find each other. Both of you need to be online at the same time.
