YouTube thumbnail size and requirements
Upload YouTube thumbnails at 1280 x 720 pixels, 16:9, under 2 MB. That is the recommended size; the hard minimum width is 640 pixels.

The size is not the problem, the scale is
Almost every thumbnail is designed at full size on a big monitor and then shown to viewers at a fraction of that. The same image appears large on the watch page, medium in search results, small in the sidebar, and tiny in mobile notifications. A design that reads beautifully at 1280 x 720 can be completely illegible at sidebar scale, which is where a lot of impressions actually happen.
Designing for the smallest surface
Use three or four words maximum, set large and heavy. Favour one clear focal point over a busy composition. Keep strong contrast between the subject and the background, because compression and small sizes both eat subtle contrast. And check the thumbnail against a dark background as well as a light one, since it will be seen on both.
Why file size matters more than it looks
The 2 MB limit sounds generous until you export a detailed PNG, which can easily exceed it. A high-quality JPG almost always fits comfortably and the difference is invisible at thumbnail scale. If you are close to the ceiling, reduce dimensions last; drop quality slightly first.

Open Thumbnail CheckerFrequently asked
What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?
1280 x 720 pixels at a 16:9 ratio, under 2 MB. The minimum accepted width is 640 pixels, but 1280 is the recommended size.
What is the maximum thumbnail file size on YouTube?
2 MB. If your export is larger, save as a high-quality JPG rather than PNG.
Which formats does YouTube accept for thumbnails?
JPG, PNG, GIF and WebP.
Why does my thumbnail look bad in search results?
Because it is displayed far smaller there than while you were designing it. Fewer, bigger words and one clear focal point survive the downscale; fine detail and small text do not.
